Ok so here are a few, well more than a few, tips. Mostly they are just observations on what makes a good site and some are personal opinions..
- The key is quality not quantity. What that means is it doesn’t matter if you have +200 pages of content, if it’s not all that good why does it matter? It’s better to have 10-15 really good tutorials that are worth reading than 60 that won’t help. Also my goal for any content on the site is that I would use it. You want content that viewers can really use..
- Ok so one of the most defining parts of the site is the layout, it’s the first thing the visitor notices when they go to your site. A quality layout can take months to make. I am not saying spend half a year making each layout, I am saying spend time working and perfecting it until you are really proud of your layout. Also don’t change it every 3 or 4 days you want to make one that you will love for months and will be sad to have to take down. Try not to follow the latest graphic design ‘trends’. Yeah you have already 5 other sites that day with little flower brushes on their layouts, do you really want your site’s layout to have the same brush as +5 other sites? Your layout should be something original that really expresses your sense of style and will instantly give the visitor a feel for the site.
- Chat speak. We all use it once and a while which is fine but don’t clutter your blogs and tutorials with stuff like ‘ya da bl0g is soooo cuwel I luv da site an sp33kin lik dis’ it’s hard to read and people will find it hard to take you seriously if you don’t spend the time to fix stuff like this. Think of every tutorial as an essay for school. Would you really turn in a paper thats written so poorly?
- Copying. Never ever ever take credit for other people’s work. Not only is it rude but it’s against the law. Really people it’s not worth the drama it creates. If you don’t want to take the time to make your own content then you shouldn’t have a site.
- Validation makes the world go around. Trust me there are few things more frustrating than to have a site load totally lopsided and messed up or getting some long string of error messages. Not only will it make viewing your site so much nicer for people to view but who doesn’t want to get to add that shiny valid CSS and XHTML sticker to their footer?
There are most likely +500 more reasons that would make a good site but these are the ones that jump into mind when I think about it. Hope this helps and good luck!
